BELIEFS

The United Methodist Church holds at its core the following Biblical beliefs common to many other Christian congregations: The sinfulness of man The holiness of God The deity of Jesus Christ The literal death, burial and resurrection of Jesus for the salvation of man The United Methodist Church follows general Wesleyan theology. John Wesley and the early Methodists placed primary emphasis on Christian living and putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as "practical divinity" has continued to be a hallmark of United Methodism today. The official doctrinal statement of Methodism is embodied in the 25 Articles of Religion which were initially adapted from the Articles of Religion by the Anglican Church (Church of England) and adopted by conference in the United States in 1784. These articles became the basic standards for Christian belief in the Methodist church in North America. First published in the church's Book of Discipline in 1790, the Articles of Religion have continued to be part of the church's official statement of belief. The Articles of Religion of the Methodist Church can be found on the official United Methodist website here: http://www.umc.org
