From the earliest founding of America, Christians have gathered together to worship God and fellowship together in homes, barns, shops, etc. As time went on many of these groups formed together, usually around a particular pastor or leader or doctrine of faith. Some were from denominations established in Europe such as Lutheran or Catholic. Others without having any formal church structure simply became know as a "Christian church."
