About House of Refuge

What is a Place of refuge? A place where one is protected - kept free from harm. Those within that place protect the people who come to them at all cost. We know that sometimes entering a church either as a follower of Jesus Christ or an unbeliever can at times feel more like they are tip toeing around a mine field than a safe environment. At House of Refuge, we feel led to create a safe environment for both the believing and unbelieving; an environment where we can openly and safely discuss our struggles and problems without feeling shamed or that it will be used as ammo against you in the future. We know that the temptations of this world constantly attack us and our children, which leads to divorce, teen pregnancy, addiction, adultery in addition to more subtle attacks like pride or the desire to tear down others with gossip. Let’s be honest, gossip and pride have become an epidemic in the church which leads us to turn our focus from the Gospel. It turns being a Christian into a contest of who can look the prettiest which forces people into bottling up their sin which will only eat them up from the inside out leading to destruction. What is desperately needed instead is confession and repentance which leads to transformation and freedom from sin and, in turn, we are renewed and transformed. Being a “Christian” is about progressively looking more like Christ, not perfection. It's worrisome when things look to pretty, cause, let’s be honest, the bible isn’t pretty. The bible from Genesis to Revelation is one story of God reconciling his rebellious creation back to himself through the life, death and resurrection of his son on the cross. The men and women God used in the process were gritty and rebellious, like David. Wasn't David the one who was called a man after Gods own heart? This doesn't mean he would get to this place perfectly. Was it not David who slept with another man’s wife then had him murdered? But God's grace and mercy abounded to him and he repented. Life is hard, it’s going to get dirty at times; we are going to fall, stumble and make mistakes. When Jesus came, he didn't come to tell us to look perfect, he came offering Himself as a safe place to work through the issues and obstacles of life. As a church we are to be the body of Christ, offering this safe place to work through sin in an invironment of mercy and grace, but also an environment that doesn't leave us in our sin, but pushed us to freedom, produces a heart for God, and instills a desire to live a life pleasing to God. So how do we do this? Here are some ways: One: We have to stay focused on the Gospel; we must rely on the work of Jesus on the cross to transform us, not our “good” morality or white knuckling of sin. Two: We have to live a daily life of confession and repentance to God through prayer, and too one another. You cannot have spiritual growth without either one. Three: A healthy and safe community is a must. Like we said it will be gritty and dirty at times, but others it will be beautiful. A group of people who push their relationships beyond the shallow surface into deep community where we rejoice with each other in good times and we mourn with each other in times of loss. Four: Missional living. Our mission as believers is Gods mission - not something we do to make ourselves feel better about ourselves or so that we can check it off our Christian check list of good deeds. This I feel has become a huge issue in the Church these days. God’s mission from Genesis to Revelation is the reconciliation of his creation to himself through the cross. Jesus’ last command before he ascended was to go out and spread the Gospel to all the nations. If what we call missions bears no fruit of people coming to know Christ it’s time to reevaluate. Missions without the Gospel being spread is just “Good” people doing good things. As we have recently been pressed on by God to branch out and start a home Church, our hope is to see God glorified by the accurate study of his word, and staying focused on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe that the Lord will bless this church as we keep to these two vital foundations. If you would like to join us on Sunday mornings, please message us for information and come join us in this journey to see what God does.
