About Saint Bartholomew's Episcopal Church
Designed by one of Brooklyn's finest architects, George P. Chappel, this Romanesque Revival Church was completed in 1890. Borrowing heavily from the English Arts and Crafts Movement, he created a rustic country church with adjoining rectory, parish house, and garage, set into its own park. The complex was declared a N.Y.C. landmark in 1974. Standing at the altar and facing the pews, the piece-de-resistance, the magnificent Tiffany Studio semicircular window at the rear of the church, near the baptistery. Dedicated in 1931, this window, depicting a stream meandering to the horizon, through a flowery wooden glen, was one of the last windows from the famed studio, which closed in 1933. It truly is a masterpiece. The rectory is a charming Arts and Crafts style cottage.
