BELIEFS
Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. He is the head of the church. We hold fast to the belief that:
Scripture, or the Bible, is the revelation of God and has authority to be the final rule of faith and life. Scripture interprets scripture and scripture alone has authority (sola scriptura).
God exists in three persons. This is the mystery that is the Holy Trinity. God the Father of creation, God the Son in Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit who works in all of our lives. The mystery of the Trinity is that there is one God who exists in three persons; Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
As human beings we are created, both male and female, in God’s image. Yet, God also gave us free will, and since the first sin by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, we are all distorted by sin, unable to be completely and totally good on our own. Thus the need for the saving grace of God, without which all humanity is lost and condemned.
Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. He lived without sin and took upon himself, through his own crucifixion, the sins of humanity for all time. Thus, we all gain our atonement through Jesus Christ and what happened on the cross. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone.
Salvation through the grace of God comes through faith in Christ. In the Gospel, God declares His love for each and every one of us and promises eternal life to those who repent of sin and truly believe in Jesus Christ. Through the Holy Spirit, the grace of God enable us to embrace the love of Christ. We cannot do it alone. Our salvation then comes only through Jesus Christ.
We affirm the universal (or catholic, with a little ‘c’) church that unites all believers with Christ as the head of the church. The true church is distinguished by the true preaching of the Word of God, the right administration of the sacraments of Christ, and church discipline rightly administered as God’s word prescribes. All of us are, therefore, called upon to be participants with our prayers, our gifts, and personal efforts to be the extension of God’s kingdom on earth.
The New Testament institutes two sacraments of Christ; Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, or Communion. Baptism is a sign and seal of our in-grafting to Christ, our regeneration, and a newness of life in Christ. We baptize infants and adults. The Lord’s Supper is the partaking of the body and blood of Christ in the symbols of bread and wine. It is a visible reminder of the sacrifice of Christ and our need to for Him as our sustenance and salvation.
We are Presbyterian in how the church is structured and governed. The Presbyterian form of church governance is representative, much like our government under the US Constitution. In fact, many of the framers of the Constitution were Presbyterians. The local church is governed by the Session, elected from the congregation. A region of churches form a Presbytery and a region of presbyteries form a Synod. The church nationwide meets from time to time in what is called the General Assembly.
Beyond just church governance, a Presbyterian way of being a Christian and worshiping God places at the center of worship the proclamation of the Word, or preaching. True preaching is grounded in Scripture, intelligible, understandable, and is believed to reveal God’s word for the people.
Union Presbyterian stands solidly in this Christian, Reformed, and Presbyterian heritage as it welcomes one and all!
