About Immanuel Lutheran Church

Immanuel is a caring community that rejoices in the wondrous gift we have been given by God: salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. We do not earn or deserve this gift, but receive it by God’s grace. We share this gift through worship, study, service and fellowship. Join us to praise the Lord and rejoice in the many blessings we have received. Children are valued and treasured members of our community and fully participate in the life of the congregation in worship, study, fellowship and service. Immanuel is a giving congregation. God’s people at Immanuel share their time, their love, their talents and their treasures to support the Lord’s work in this congregation and beyond. We follow Christ’s charge and example to care for those who are in need. We participate in visiting the sick, the grieving, and the lonely, in supporting local and global ministries to feed the hungry, care for the homeless, care for the ill and aged, and minister to youth. The strength of our congregation lies in the Word of God. Immanuel’s beauty is found in the message of Christ’s pardoning grace. Under God’s blessing, we can be a source of spiritual blessing to others. We are a member of the Southeastern Iowa Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and mission partners with the Dindimo Secondary School in the Pare Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania.

Service Ministries include monthly collections for different groups: Food Pantry (continuous), Hospice House, Homeless Shelter, VA Hospital, school supply collection, Humane Society, local care center, overseas military and college students. Additionally, we participate in the annual Paint-a-thon where the outside of a local resident's (senior, veteran or disabled) home is painted at no cost to them. We also collect funds as needed to support disaster recovery within the US and around the world and donate them to relief efforts undertaken by Lutheran Disaster Response and Lutheran World Relief. During Lent, we collect funds to purchase animals, tools or other materials through either Heifer International or ELCA World Hunger Good Gifts program. Mediapolis has a community youth group for junior high through high school. This is a joint ministry of the Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian and Lutheran congregations in Mediapolis and the Mediapolis area. Immanuel actively supports this ministry and encourages our youth to attend,
Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts use our facilities for meetings. Additionally, FFA has also used Immanuel's facilities for meetings. The fellowship hall has also been used for family reunions, funeral luncheons, graduation celebrations, and other gatherings.

BELIEFS

Immanuel confesses the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Immanuel confesses Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We believe that we are justified (made right with God) by grace through faith. We are saved not by our own efforts but by the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the Word of God incarnate, through whom everything was made and through whose life, death, and resurrection God fashions a new creation. The Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the written Word of God. Inspired by God’s Spirit speaking through their authors, they record and announce God’s revelation centering in Jesus Christ. Through them God’s Spirit speaks to us to create and sustain Christian faith and fellowship for service in the world. Immanuel accepts the canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God and the authoritative source and norm of its proclamation, faith, and life. The proclamation of God’s message to us as both Law and Gospel is the Word of God. God’s Word reveals judgement and mercy through word and deed, beginning with the Word in creation, continuing in the history of Israel, and centering in all its fullness in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Immanuel accepts the Apostles’, Nicene and Athanasian Creeds as true declarations of the faith of this congregation. Immanuel accepts the Unaltered Augsburg Confession as a true witness to the Gospel. Immanuel accepts the other confessional writings in the Book of Concord, namely, the Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles and the Treatise, the Small Catechism, the Large Catechism, and the Formula of Concord, as further valid interpretations of the faith of the Church. Immanuel confesses the Gospel, recorded in the Holy Scripture and confessed in the ecumenical creeds and the Lutheran confessional writings, as the power of God to create and sustain the Church for God’s mission in the world. Through Jesus, God has given us two sacraments: Holy Baptism and the Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion).
