About six years ago, I visited this church with a couple of non-Christian Chinese students and was impressed by the service. A week ago I had the opportunity to visit it again, this time with my webmaster, who also is Chinese and Christian.
One wonders how and why churches change over time and, sadly, often for the worse. In this case, it was for the better. This church is located on the east side of D. C. and is not in an affluent area. Although there is some parking for automobiles it is very limited so that I would not recommend driving to the service. We rode bicycles which are readily available in D. C.
The church was almost completely full. It has since doubled its capacity from my previous visit and I estimated there to be about 800 in attendance.
The service was very much in the realm of a traditional Baptist service as with Charles Haddon Spurgeon. There was a grand piano and electric guitar to accompany the singing. I was surprised and grateful that the singing was truly outstanding. There were six hymns, one Psalm (#100) and the Doxology. One of the hymns was contemporary and of the other five two were unfamiliar to me. The text of the sermon was Genesis 10, the genealogy after Noah - a text that even CHS never preached on. The sermon, which was quite lengthy, was surprisingly excellent. At the end of the service there was a brief period of silence which was quite refreshing. Following the service there were sweet rolls and coffee at various areas of the building. I was unable to stay with my friend for that.
The congregation was an excellent mixture of ethnicities and ages and seemed to be quite friendly and engaged.
Based on my two visits I would highly recommend this church.
