When I began attending this church back in the early 80s, it had a very safe, comforting atmosphere. Then, in the early 90s, Pastor Jim Colerick (and his wife Mary Sue) came in and began changing things based on what was clearly their personal agenda. There were rumors that the pair used to run a small-time drug outfit in a mid-sized metropolitan area. Whether or not that scandalous rumor is true, it's beyond question that they instituted a ministry that spoke strongly to the streets and was heavily geared toward courting urban youth involved in "hip hop" culture. As this happened, I became uncomfortable. These were people from a lifestyle I didn't understand. Sure, Mary Sue would pull up the boys' pants whenever they'd come in saggin', saying, "Jesus rose - so can your trousers!" But, in my humble opinion, it just wasn't enough. I soon found another congregation. I hear the church closed down in the early 2000s, and I'm honestly not one bit surprised.
