BELIEFS

The Bible We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts. It is accurate in all matters to which it speaks, spiritual, historic and scientific. The 66 books of the Old and New Testaments are the foundation of the faith and practice of REFUGE. It has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20,21, Mark 13:31; John 8:31,32, John 20:31, Acts 20:32.) God God exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The three have distinct personalities and yet are of the same substance, one God. We believe that these are equal in every divine perfection and that they execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence and redemption. (Genesis 1:1,26; John 1:1,3, 10:30; John 4;24; Duet 6:4; Matthew 28:19; Rom. 1:19,20; 2 Cor. 13:14; Eph. 4:5,6) The Father We believe in God the Father, an infinite, personal spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom and power and love. We believe that he infallibly foreknows all that shall come to pass, that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ. (Luke 10:21, 22; Matt. 23:9; John 3:16; 6:27; Rom. 1:7; I Tim. 1:1,2; 2:5,6; I Pet. 1:3; Rev. 1:6.) Jesus Christ We believe in Jesus Christ, Gods only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, and teachings. We believe in His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people, and personal visible return to earth. (Matt. 1;18-25; Luke 1:26-38; John 1:1; 20;28; Romans 9:5; 8:46; 2 Cor. 5:21) Holy Spirit We believe in the Holy Spirit who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgement, and to regenerate, sanctify, and empower all who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Christ, and that He is an abiding helper, teacher and guide. (John 14:16, 17, 26; 15:26, 27; John 16:9-14; Rom. 8:9; 1 Cor. 3:16; 6:19, Gal. 5:22-26) Man Man is created in the image and likeness of God. In Adam all mankind fell into sin and thereby incurred physical, spiritual and eternal death, which is separation from God; that as a consequence, all human beings are born with a sinful nature and are sinners by choice and therefore under condemnation. with the result that all men are sinners. Men are justly condemned to eternal judgement and can do nothing to merit salvation. (Ge. 1:26, Gen. 3, 2:17, 3:19; Romans 2:2, 3, 5; Eph. 2:8,9; Gen. 1:27, Rom. 5:12, 3:23; Eph. 2:1) Salvation Salvation is given to those chosen of God and drawn to Christ by the Holy Spirit. We believe that those who repent and forsake sin at the preaching of the Gospel and trust Jesus Christ as Savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit and become new creatures, delivered from condemnation and receive eternal life. ( Rom. 10:9-17; Eph. 2:8, I John 1:9, John 3:16, John 1:13; 2 Cor. 5:17; Romans 8:1) Assurance All who are born in the Spirit through faith in Christ can have assurance of salvation and are eternally secure in Christ. (Rom. 5:1; I John 5:13; John 10:27-29; 17;12; 2 Tim. 1:12; Eph. 4:30; John 6:37) The Church The Church is composed of all true believers. it is the body of and bride of Christ, formed by the baptism of the Holy Spirit and existing in two aspects, universal and local. The universal church is an elect company of believers, baptized by the Holy Spirit into one body. Its mission is to witness to its head, Jesus Christ, preaching the gospel among all nations. The local church is a group of believers voluntarily joined together in love to worship God with praise and thanksgiving, and to glorify Jesus Christ through an aggressive effort to disciple others by the preaching of the gospel, and the exercise of spiritual gifts. (Eph 1:22, 23; 5;24-30; I Cor. 12;4-13, 27) Spiritual Gifts Spiritual gifts are God given abilities for service, i.e., "for the equipping the saints for the work of service to the building up of the body of Christ." (Eph. 4:1-16; I Cor. 12:7,11, I Pet, 4:10, Rom. 12:1-6) Christian Life Christians are called to a holy life of service and testimony in the power of the Holy Spirit. This service includes the propagation of the gospel message to the whole world. All believers are promised rewards in heaven for their faithful service. (I Pet. 1;15, 16; Acts 1:8; I Cor. 3:12-17; John 14:1-3) Ordinances The Bible sets forth two ordinances, the Lords Supper and water Baptism. the Lords Supper is to be celebrated regularly in remembrance of Christ death on the cross, and in expectation of His return. Water baptism is an outward testimony of a persons belief in Christ. Immersion is the ideal means set forth in Scripture. (Matt. 28;19,20; Mark 16:15, 16; Acts 8:12, 36-38; 9:18; 10:47; 11:23-26) Religious Liberty We believe that every human being has direct relations with God, and is responsible to God alone in all matters of faith; that each church is independent and must be free from interference by any ecclesiastical or political authority; that therefore Church and State must be kept separate as having different functions, each fulfilling its duties free from dictation or patronage of the other. (I tim. 2:5; Romans 14:7-9,12) Angels Angels were originally created holy, but now because of Satan's rebellion, there is also an unholy angelic kingdom. (Col. 1:16, Job 38:6,7, Ps. 148:2-5; Jude 6, matt. 25:41, Eph. 6:11, 12, I Tim. 5;21; Rev. 12:9) Second Coming We believe in the personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to earth and the establishment of His kingdom. We believe in the resurrection of the body, the final judgement, the eternal felicity of the righteous and the endless suffering of the wicked. (Matt. 16:27; Mark 14:62; John 14;3; Acts 1:11; Phil. 3:20, I Thess. 4:15; 2 Tim. 4:1; Titus 2:13; I Cor. 4:5; I Cor. 15; 2 Thess 1:7-10; Rev. 20:4-6, 11-15.)
