I know it's hard to feel at home the first time you visit a new church. Maybe it's not even possible. But it sure didn't take long before I felt at home at First Pres. I grew up Catholic but stopped going after I left home for college, so I hadn't gone to church regularly for years. My wife visited just about every church in Waukesha and settled on First Pres, and then she dragged me along. I liked the message right away, and it didn't take long before I really got to like the people, too (even though I've always been shy). Now I look forward to going to church!
I love the fact that people at First Pres seem like family members. We genuinely care about each other. But it's NOT a closed family, and that's the beautiful thing: Anyone can become part of the family. It seems to me that we strive to live by the words (Mark 12:30-31)
"you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
We try to do this in our worship, in our Mission work (helping others), and in our fellowship (loving each other). We're a small congregation, but mighty, I like to think!
