Pastor Brent Waldon Bethel SDA Church (Gainesville, Florida) I am writing this to express my discontent and disappointment with the board members of this church. I will keep this as concise as possible. My family member has served this church for over 13 years. My daughter was blessed in this church as well. My family member has been going through a crisis that is affecting her mental capacity at this time. We, as her family, are being told that she is not allowed back at the church. They went as far as to threaten to file a restraining order against her. I spoke to Elder Washington to get a clearer picture and understanding as to why this has escalated to the point of potentially calling Law Enforcement being an option on a mental health patient. This is actually the worst thing you can do by the way, as a mental health professional myself, I know this. I was met with the explanation of her being "disruptive" during the service. Apparently, this has been happening for the past 3 sabbaths. We were informed the second sabbath that she is to not come back until she is "normal." They informed us that they explained this to my family member. We were called again the 3rd sabbath, which was this past Saturday that if she comes back Law Enforcement would be called. My family member does not drive. She usually gets rides from members of the church. These individuals have been discouraged from picking her up. So, my family member took the city bus this past sabbath. I understand the concerns surrounding a mental health patient with visitors not knowing her and possibly being offended by her actions. What I am not understanding, is as a church, why is no help being offered. Elder Washington stated that he is not a clinical psychologist, but this is church; this is God's church. Your jobs as a servant of the church is to offer services not shun someone from her only safe place and tell her not to come back. Was a homevisit offered? Did anyone offer to come to her home and pray with her? She can't come to church, but can't the deacons and deconesses bring church to her? Elder Washington had no answers for me. You are supposed to service the community. You're telling me you can't offer nothing to a woman who has served this church and the people for years in the name of God? I told Elder Washington that this church and the board members should be ashamed. He actually said "I don't feel bad" and that was all I needed to hear. If you cannot serve your community you need to step down as an Elder and step down as a man who has vowed to serve God. Anyone from a drug addict to a homeless person should be able to walk into any church and feel welcomed, feel accepted and feel embraced. I am so ashamed and disappointed. You all will have to answer to God as to why you offered nothing to help this sweet individual.
